With a massive filmography, I still haven't managed to see everything David has appeared in, for now here is my personal 10 favourites. It's just a brief couple of notes as a more in depth reviews of the films we be available in the reviews section.
1. Nightwing
(1979)
This was my first David Warner film I watched, he plays vampire bat killer Philip Payne and is the good guy for a change. I caught it late night on T.V, and after that he would keep popping up in other films and I became a fan.
2. Time After Time
(1979)
Another one from 1979, David plays Jack The Ripper a.k.a John Leslie Stevenson , he is up against H.G Wells played brilliantly by Malcolm Mcdowell . It's a great time travel movie and the film has aged really well. Mary Steenburgen is good in the supporting role and although David is the villain, he is very cool and likeable.
3. In The Mouth Of Madness
(1995)
Two year after working with John Carpenter on Body Bags , along came In The Mouth Of Madness , a fantastic horror tale, great soundtrack and super cast, Sam Neil , Bernie Casey , Peter Jason , the under used Julie Carmen and a great cameo by the mighty Charlton Heston . David plays Dr Wrenn , most of his scenes although short are memorable, including the classic line 'Theres a guard with a pair of swollen testicles who could have sworn you wanted out of here!'
4. The Ballad Of Cable Hogue
(1970)
One of the many collaberations with
Sam Peckinpah
David had, and some of his best performances were to be found in these films, here in
Ballad
he plays the
Reverend
Joshua Sloan
, he's a drinker, lusts after women but all in the name of the lord! A truly great performance that showed us some of the different ranges of acting David has.
5. Waxwork
(1988)
I think by the time waxwork was released it would be fair to say that David could be considered to be a cult actor, he would appear many films that were similar to waxwork with the comedy horror element and was in demand for these kind of roles. Here he plays the mysterious David Lincoln although he is credited in the film as waxwork man . He runs a waxwork where if you step over the barrier into the display you enter for real what was there, some great ideas and nods to some classic horror films. David plays the villain here to a tee, and the film itself has become a cult classic with talks of a remake.
6. From Beyond The Grave
(1973)
One of the many anthology films that David would appear in is From Beyond The Grave is my favourite , here he plays a typical English businessman Edward Charlton who stumbles upon an antique mirror in 'Peter Cushings' antique store, this film actually is still quite chilling as he succumbs to the evil spectre that is in the mirror and the terror of them swapping places.
7. Tripwire
(1990)
At number 7 in my list is 1990's straight to video action thriller Tripwire, it is another villain role for David as he plays a terrorist after revenge on the federal agent who killed his son in a bungled weapons deal. The reason I like this one is that David is the star of the film, the action scenes are done very well, the only disappointing thing about the film is how his character is killed off very quickly at the end. Good supporting cast from Yaphet Kotto and Viggo Mortensen.
8. My Best Friend Is A Vampire
(1988)
With the stream of teen-horror and action flicks released at the time such as Teenwolf , Teen witch and Teen Agent that were around at the time, a comedy spin was put on the vampire flick. I really enjoy this film and it is in my favourites because it shows off some great comedy acting and scene stealing from Mr Warner.
